DSL Modem Information

Back

The DSL modem connects between the data part of the phone line and your computer. The phone line side is a normal RJ-11 phone jack. The computer side is a 10BaseT Ethernet connection. Since there is no standard yet for DSL, the modem at both ends of the phone line must be the same. Qwest and Verizon use different types. (Qwest uses an Actiontec and a 2Wire, while Verizon uses a Westell.)

The DSL modem/router is purchased from the telephone company. Verizon offers the Westell 2200 DSL modem/router for $49.95. Qwest offers the Actiontec DSL modem/router for $5/month rental or $59.99 purchase, and the 2Wire 2700HG for $8/month rental or $149.99 purchase. EasyStreet recommends the 2Wire.
